The CSS Junior History Tutorial will focus on conservatism in U.S. History from the 1790s until today. This tutorial will provide an overview of conservative thinkers, attitudes, leaders, and protests in U.S. history. In the first session we will look at highly diverse conservative attitudes from the time of George Washington until the 1930s. Afterward, we will focus on the era from 1945 through the 1980s. Over that period a small group of eccentric opponents to New Deal liberalism emerged, slowly coalesced, and were joined by highly articulate advocates, popular leaders, and tens of thousands of followers. By the 1980s the conservative movement had triumphed in American politics, with worldwide impact. The concluding sessions will consider the travails of American conservatism since 2001. |
