Judaism(s): Religion, Power, and Identity in Jewish History

RELI 204
Fall 2015
Section: 01
Crosslisting: CJST 241
Certificates: International Relations, Jewish and Israel Studies

This course will offer students an historical overview of the development of Judaism. While following the shift from tribal society, to monotheistic monarchy, to text and community-based diaspora, students will get to read primary historical texts from great Jewish thinkers and writers, as well as texts written about Jews by non-Jews. The course will engage students with a variety of critical issues including race, gender, power, and politics. It will ask them to look both locally and globally at the various ways in which Judaism is expressed and to think about the plurality of Jewish identities.
