This course offers advanced theoretical, historical and performative perspectives on Bharatanatyam. It covers topics such as post-colonial perspectives on hereditary performers, globalization and the commoditization of Bharatanatyam practice, and critical approaches to Indian dance history. In terms of studio work, the course involves the performance of 19th century compositions, largely from the imperial city of Tanjavur. |

Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy, Interpretation
In this course, students are expected to perform Bharatnatyam as a separate 40-minute dance concert. The repertoire includes classical work as well as contemporary work based on the students improvisational/choreographic abilities to abstract and re-interpret the classical grammar from a totally modern perspective. New ideas of what defines "contemporary dance" are discussed in the class thru an advanced reading list of the latest scholarship on contemporary Bharatanatyam as well as looking at and analyzing current video material of Bharatanatyam dance from India as well as in the Diaspora. The course heavily relies on the students' performative, choreographic and scholarly skills as they sieve thru the complex material of the changing trends of tradition intersecting with modernity and what the repercussions this will have on history, aesthetics, world culture and politics.

Examinations and Assignments:
Class participation, discussions, video viewing, performing in concert, journal and short research paper. Students are required to perform advanced repertoire in a special class concert. |

Prerequisites: DANC261 OR DANC362
Students are required to have taken either Bharatanatyam I (DANC261) or Bharatanatyam II (DANC362). This is to ensure that students have a foundation in both the practical and theoretical study of Bharatanatyam prior to enrolling in this course. |
