Applied Vectors and Matrices

QAC 220
Spring 2023
Section: 01
Course Cluster and Certificates: Applied Data Science Certificate

An introduction to the mathematics of matrices and their application in traditional and modern methods of data analysis and scientific computing. The course promotes an interdisciplinary approach, and topics may include:

- Coordinate transformations in data visualization, iterated patterns in mosaics and art
Use of perspective projection in art and its representation as a matrix transformation
- Linear system solvers and their applications in image alignment and geo-referencing of old maps in GIS systems
- Use of least squares approach with linear solvers for alignment and geo-referencing in the presence of errors
- PCA-decomposition of computer images (the "eigenfaces" example) and multispectral images from satellites
- Use of linear solvers to find solutions to tiling problems like Sudoku, and
- Recommender systems

The course will introduce students to operations in Adobe Photoshop (for image transformations and blending), ArcGIS Pro (for coordinate transformations and geo-referencing of maps), Mathematica (for symbolic math), and R, thus serving as an introduction to these tools as well.
