This course examines the history of black Americans from colonial settlement through the Civil War, focusing particularly on the many ways in which African Americans have contributed to the founding of the nation and their struggles to achieve freedom and equality in American society. Starting chronologically with the colonial period, we will explore the rise of chattel slavery in the American colonies and the contestations over freedom and liberty in the Revolutionary and Early National eras. The class will pay equal attention to the histories of black men and women, and it will situate the history of black Americans in the larger story of American history. Indeed, this class will insist that African American history is American history: it is impossible to understand the history of the United States without understanding the oppression of blacks and their history of struggle and resistance. |
