Why does colonialism and settler colonialism matter to the fields of Latin American studies and American studies? What have been the consequences for the nations that make up the Western Hemisphere? This course offers a comparative analysis of colonial ventures and their consequences in the Americas. Topics to be investigated include the often violent encounters of Indigenous, European, and African peoples; the formation of colonial and settler colonial societies; independence movements and the emergence of nation-states, as well as ongoing nationalist struggles for decolonization. Diverse theoretical and methodological approaches allow us to approach critical issues relating to land and labor in relation to indigeneity and race as they are embedded in cultural and material forms, from an interdisciplinary perspective. |
