This course introduces students to concepts, theories, and methods of cultural anthropology. Lectures, readings, and audiovisual materials invite critical analysis of broader themes in contemporary anthropology, such as the nature of culture, the problematic notions of social evolution and progress, and the negotiation of power within and among diverse peoples. |

Short reading responses, ethnographic practicum exercises, a take-home midterm and a final essay. |

This section introduces students to ideas and methods in cultural anthropology by focusing on an anthropological understanding of three critical problems Americans face today--the armed conflict along the Afghan/Pakistan Frontier, aging in a complex society, and crime in the urban ghetto. |
