Architecture of the 20th Century

Course Cluster: Urban Studies

The course considers influential works in architecture, its theory and criticism, and ideas for urbanism mostly in Europe and the United States from about 1900 to the present. Early parts of the semester focus on the origin and development of the modern movement in Europe to 1940, with attention given to selected American developments before World War II. Later parts of the course deal with Western architecture from 1945 to the present, including later modernist, postmodernist, and deconstructivist work, urbanism and housing, computer-aided design, green buildings, and postwar architecture in Latin America, Japan, and postcolonial India and Africa.
