In this introduction to the history and art of West Africa from the late first millennium A.D. to the colonial period, we will cover topics including the trans-Saharan trade, the origins of state formation, the spread of Islam south of the Sahara, and the slave trade. We will integrate history with study of the architectural monuments of medieval West Africa including the Friday Mosque in Jenne and masquerades and rituals of West Africa up to the colonial period. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: This course will conclude on December 1, 2005. To gain the full complement of course hours, students will be required to participate in the field trip to New York on October 1, 2005. Regular attendance mandatory. Approximate cost of bus to NY - $25. No foreign languages needed; French would be helpful. |
