Activist art emerged in the mid-1970s and continues to evolve and expand in the tumultuous early years of the 21st century. This hybrid cultural practice, which is shaped as much by the real world as it is by the art world, raises questions that have long fueled debates about the relationship between art and politics. Should political issues inform artistic production and the content of artwork? What power does art have to effect sociopolitical change? This seminar will focus on the period from the 1960s to the present by exploring the confluence of aesthetic, sociopolitical, and technological impulses of the last 35 years or more that have contributed to the emergence of this artistic phenomenon. |

Major Readings:
Readings will include monographs, journal articles, essays, and contemporary reviews in the areas of art history, as well as relevant political and historical texts.

Examinations and Assignments:
Evaluation will be based on class participation, demonstration of critical reading of assigned texts, ability to do independent research, the quality and timely completion of research and writing assignments, and attendance. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Permission of instructor. Interview required. Interviews will be held the first two weeks of November, 2009, and by appointment only. Writing sample demonstrating critical thinking ability required. An interest and knowledge of contemporary art, culture and politics is important. Willingness to commit to two Saturday field trips to New York City galleries and museums. Transportation and its costs will be the responsibility of the student. |
