Topics in Studio Art: Series and Sequence
ARST 400
Spring 2011

Historically artists have often produced work in series, and do so for various reasons. Some series are very tied to a text and are therefore fixed in a determined sequence, such as illustrations for a traditional narrative in a bound book. Other series explore one idea but not in any fixed order, though they are often, by necessity, placed in an order for exhibition or publication. This course is open to all students who have had a first studio course: drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, typography, sculpture or architecture, and wish to explore how that medium may work in series. Or they might venture into a new medium. We will begin with the most traditional fixed sequence--the book, but after an initial four-week book problem, the class will open to very individual interpretations of the idea of series and sequence.
For one hour each week we will examine the many series and sequences in the Davison Art Center collection, not as printmakers or book designers, but rather trying to understand how one idea is expressed and extended through a series of individual parts. |
