This course is a synthesis of fundamentals of design principles and introduction to design vocabulary, process methodologies, and craft. Emphasis is placed on developing students' ability to examine the relationship between production (the process of creating things) and expression (the conveying of ideas and meaning) involved in the making of architecture. The intent of the course is to develop students' awareness and understanding of the built environment as a result of the investigations, observations, and inquiries generated in the studio. |

Readings relevant to topics explored in each design project will be assigned.

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will explore design concepts and methodologies through a series of 5 projects. They are expected to maintain a sketchbook as a diary of sketches and development of architectural thought. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students are expected to attend all class sessions. Drawing I or similar background in freehand drawing recommended. This course is not open to first-year students.
Selection by interview with Professor Huge. A portfolio of previous creative work may be presented during the interview, but is not required. POI interviews are on Monday, April 8th and Monday April 15th, 2-5 pm in Art Studio North, room 104. Please sign up in advance at Art Studio North, room 104. |
