This introductory-level course in painting (oils) emphasizes work from observation and stresses the fundamentals of formal structure: color, paint manipulation, composition, and scale. Students will address conceptual problems that will allow them to begin to develop an understanding of the power of visual images to convey ideas and expressions. The course will include individual and group critiques and museum trips. |
Essential Capabilities:
Designing, Creating, and Realizing, Interpretation Interpretation - Students will become fluent in the critical reading/decoding of visual images, and translate that understanding into text and oral presentations. Designing, Creating and Realizing - Students will conceive, create and complete original works of art that successfully convey their ideas and interests to an audience.

Examinations and Assignments: Midterm and group and individual critiques. A minimum of ten hours of independent studio work is required each week. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Prerequisites: ARST131 Materials fee: $145.00. Selection by interview with instructor and review of a portfolio containing no more than 10 works on paper. Date and times of interviews will be posted outside art studios and available by contacting the department office. Interviews will take place before the end of pre-registration. Interviews will be held on Monday, April 7 from 3-5pm in Art Studio South 103. A list of those students accepted in the course will be posted the following day. |
