Typography
ARST 242
Spring 2018 not offered
|
Course Cluster: Integrated Design, Engineering & Applied Science Minor |
The fundamentals of fonts, letter forms, typographic design, elements of the book, and an introduction to contemporary graphic design are considered through a progression of theoretical exercises. Once working knowledge of the typeshop and InDesign (software for book design) is acquired, each student conceives, designs, and prints: first, a broadside, then a book. Use is made of the collection in the Davison Rare Book Room at Olin Library. While NOT a required sequence, this course is strongly recommended before taking ARST243. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Interviews for Typography ARST 442 will be in my office, Art Workshops, 007 (off the printshop in the basement) during my office hours 10:00 - 12:00 and 2:00-4:00 Tuesday, November 8, and Tuesday, November 15. I will try to be there on Wednesday morning after 10 for those who genuinely have classes on Tuesday.
For Typography be prepared to explain your informed interest in the subject. If you have done any work in typography or graphic design you may bring it or show it to me online, but your reasons for wanting the course are more important.
For Printmaking please bring examples of your work from Drawing I, a few quick in class figure drawings, and some more sustained drawings, probably homework.
I will be giving out no more than 75% of the seats in pre-registration so you may still be able to enroll in drop/add even if you don¿t receive a POI at this stage. |
