The fundamentals of planetary, stellar, galactic, and extragalactic astronomy will be covered. This course serves as an introduction to the subject for potential majors and as a survey for nonmajors who have a good high school preparation in math and science. We will cover selected topics within the solar system, galaxy, local universe, and cosmology, including the big bang theory of the origin of the universe and the discovery of planets around other stars. |
Essential Capabilities:
Quantitative Reasoning Students will explore mathematical and physical descriptions of the cosmos.

Examinations and Assignments: Two in-semester exams, final exam, and weekly problem sets. This course will include a weekly evening laboratory section in which we will use the telescopes at Van Vleck Observatory to observe astronomical objects discussed in class, as well as, perform computer-based laboratory experiments. Attendance at the evening section is mandatory. The meeting date and time will be determined in consultation with students at the first class. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: This is a mathematically based introduction to astronomy for potential majors and others with a good science preparation. Calculus is used occasionally. Some knowledge of physics (a good high school course or introductory college course) is assumed. |
