Course Cluster and Certificates: Planetary Science, Planetary Science Minor |
The fundamentals of astronomy will be covered. This course serves as an introduction to the subject for potential majors and as a survey for non-majors who have a good high school preparation in math and science. We will cover selected topics within the solar system, galaxy, local universe, and cosmology, including the Big Bang Theory of the origin of the universe and the discovery of planets around other stars. |

Examinations and Assignments: : Two in-semester exams, final exam, weekly problem sets, and a paper. This course will include occasional evening labs in which we will use the telescopes at Van Vleck Observatory to observe astronomical objects discussed in class. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: This is a mathematically based introduction to astronomy for potential majors and others with a good science and math preparation. Calculus is used occasionally. Some knowledge of physics, at the level of a good high school course or introductory college course, is assumed. |
