Introduction to Astronomical Techniques

This course introduces some basic techniques of observational astronomy. The student will become familiar with the use of telescopes and instruments of Van Vleck Observatory, as well as acquiring basic knowledge about the sky. Acquisition and analysis of basic astronomical data will be stressed, including statistical and computer skills, techniques, and computer modeling. Topics covered will include celestial coordinates, time, catalogs and atlases, computer-assisted data analysis, telescopes and optics, photometry, and imaging. The course will stress the application of techniques learned in lecture through observing and computer exercises.
