Course Cluster and Certificates: Planetary Science, Planetary Science Minor |
This course introduces the techniques of observational astronomy. Students will acquire a basic knowledge of the sky and become familiar with the use of Van Vleck Observatory's telescopes and instruments. Acquisition and analysis of astronomical data via modern techniques are stressed. Topics include celestial coordinates, time, telescopes and optics, astronomical imaging, and photometry. Some basic computer and statistical analysis skills are developed as well. The concepts discussed in lecture are illustrated through observing projects and computer exercises. |

Bi-weekly quizzes, approximately 8 problem sets, and several observational projects. The observing projects are carried out at night; students should expect to spend an average of 3-4 evening hours per week on them. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course is one of two gateway courses for the Astronomy major (along with ASTR155). It can also be taken as a "focused inquiry" course by interested non-majors. Although ASTR155 is not a required prerequisite for ASTR211, prior knowledge of basic astronomy at the level of a descriptive non-majors courses such as ASTR105, ASTR107, ASTR 108, or ASTR 111 is required as a minimum. Consult with the instructor if you are uncertain whether you have the necessary background. Proficiency with Python coding is expected in this course. Prospective Astronomy majors should taks ASTR 210 prior to ASTR 211; other prgramming courses are suitable for non-majors (COMP 112, QAC 155). Contact the instructor if you have questions regarding the level of coding experience required. |
