Developmental Biology
BIOL 218
Spring 2027
Section: 01

This is an extraordinary time for the field of Developmental Biology. Advancements in imaging and experimental strategies, particularly those that manipulate gene expression, have led to a rapid expansion in our understanding of how organisms develop and how developmental programs are also used in adult tissues. Developmental Biology is a discipline that draws on a variety of model organisms, and students will be introduced to several of these as we explore the mechanisms of development at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. Special attention will be paid to the process of scientific discovery, the experiments themselves, and students will engage with original research data throughout the course. Through lectures, class discussion, and assignments, students will develop a broad and deep understanding of developmental biology, gain insight into the scientific process of inquiry, experimentation, and interpretation, and build skills in analytical and critical thinking as well as scientific writing.
