Presentation and active discussion of current research articles in evolutionary biology. Each semester the class will choose one theme within evolutionary biology to be the focus of discussion. Themes from recent semesters have included genome-based evolution studies, coevolution, speciation, phylogenetic approaches for investigating natural selection, the role of competition in evolution, the evolution of host-parasite relationships, the evolution of behavior, and the impact of niche construction on adaptive evolution. Articles for discussion generally come from the journals EVOLUTION, AMERICAN NATURALIST, GENETICS, SCIENCE, and NATURE. |

Examinations and Assignments: Participation in discussions about journal articles presented. Each student will present and lead discussion on one journal article during the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Prerequisites:BIOL182 or MB&B182. Undergraduates may take this course up to two times for a letter grade and up to four times for credit towards graduation. Permission of instructor approval will be granted by the instructors during pre-registration through the Electronic Portfolio. Also, if you have not previously taken this course, please indicate by email to any of the instructors the strength of your background in evolutionary biology and the extent of your interest in engaging in discussions of the literature of evolutionary biology. |
