We will examine the structure and function of muscle cells, the development of muscle cell identity, the development of motor neurons, and the interactions between nerve and muscle that lead to a functioning neuromuscular system. The course will focus primarily on vertebrate model systems such as chick, mouse, and fish. We will also examine human diseases, including muscular dystrophies and related neuromuscular disorders. |

Examinations and Assignments: One paper in format of grant proposal; one exam; reviews of three other students' grant proposals; one class presentation. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students electing this course should be prepared to read the assignments with diligence and to participate in class discussions. Three types of developmental biology research will be covered in this area: Cell Biology, Molecular genetics, and Neurobiology. Students will be expected to be proficient in all the areas covered, however each student will concentrate on one of those areas, depending on their interests and background. |
