THEA 202 |
A lecture and discussion course on major works of 5th century BCE Greek tragedies and comedies. Major emphasis will be on reading the plays as performances rather than simply as texts. In order to do so, we will focus on the literary aspects of the plays, on the historical and social context in which they are performed, and on the conventions of Greek theatrical production. In addition, some 20th century non-Greek plays may be assigned in order to illuminate certain tragic and comic motifs. |
