HIST 204 |
This course explores the development of Greek civilization from the Bronze Age Mycenaeans to the death of Alexander the Great. We will ask big questions: What did democracy mean in the ancient world? How did war shape political life and cultural values? Why did Greek city-states rise, flourish, and sometimes go to war with one another? These questions will be explored through close engagement with primary literature as well as evidence from art and archaeology. Readings in translation include works by Homer, Herodotus, Thucydides, Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. No previous knowledge of ancient Greece or classical antiquity is required.
This course fulfills the requirement for an Ancient History Survey course. |
