| Section:

|
This is an introduction to dance as an educational, technical, and creative discipline for students with no previous formal dance training. Classes will introduce the basic components of dance technique--stretching, strengthening, aligning the body, and developing coordination in the execution of rhythmic movement patterns. Through improvisation, composition, and performing, students will develop a solid framework applicable to all forms of dance. |
Essential Capabilities:
Designing, Creating, and Realizing, Interpretation In this introductory level course students will become familiar with some of the basic kinesthetic components of dance, exploring time, space and force, as well as develop their comfort with movement invention. Individual and group assignments include creative projects in movement and in other art forms presented to the class as a whole. The culminating exercise of this course requires that students design, create and realize a small group dances to be performed in the Worlds of Dance Concert. Interpretation- Through a broad range of readings encompassing historical, social, political, ethnographic and somatic perspectives, and the viewing of both live and pre-recorded dance concerts, students will develop multiple frameworks for defining and interpreting dance. They will be asked to present their own written and verbal interpretations throughout the semester, grounding their analysis/interpretation in perspectives gained from the readings, studio movement experiences, and concert viewing.
