Dance Composition

This is a basic course in creating and performing choreography with emphasis on the diversity of techniques and methods available to the choreographer. Assignments will revolve around inventing, organizing, and evaluating movement in a variety of dance styles including modern, jazz, ballet, and others. The focus in the first semester is on solo work and movement invention. The second semester focuses on group work. This course is a prerequisite for DANC371.

Essential Capabilities: Designing, Creating, and Realizing
The focus of this course is on the process of designing, creating and realizing a project-length composition through movement. We accomplish this by exploring various methods for of movement invention compositional structures and paradigmatic approaches to dance and performance. Students present drafts of an original project to classmates and the dance faculty for feedback in formal `showings¿. Each member will spend significant time exploring, individually and in small ensembles, various ways that meaning is structured and communicated/interpreted through dance, and drafting and revising their dances. Significant reading in music, dance, anthropology, gender studies and architecture undertaken. Assigned writing, concert attendance, rehearsal directing and attendance at individual conferences expected.
