Instruction in the classical dance of central Java will begin with the basic movement vocabulary and proceed to the study of dance repertoires. At the end of the semester, an informal recital will be arranged with the accompaniment of live gamelan music. Emphasis is on the female style. |
Essential Capabilities:
Designing, Creating, and Realizing Designing, Creating, and Realizing: This course is based on the practice of interpreting and performing Javanese dance. Intercultural Literacy: By studying dance from different national origins particular to Indonesia, students will acquire comparative frameworks pertinent to the act of cross-cultural comparison and interpretation.

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Regular registration or go to the first class. Professor Urip Sri Maeny may accept additional students, if there is space available. Upon the completion of Javanese Dance I, students are encouraged to take the group tutorial (Javanese Dance II) to study advanced repertoire and Balinese Dance. |
