Indonesian dance reflects the extraordinary cultural diversity of an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands. Across Indonesia, movement, music, costume, storytelling, and ritual take distinctive forms shaped by regional histories and traditions. Balinese dance will serve as the foundation of the course. Students will develop an understanding of Balinese posture, hand and eye articulation, footwork, rhythm, spatial awareness, expressive character, and the close relationship between movement and music. Alongside this Balinese foundation, students will be introduced to other Indonesian traditions, including Javanese and Sundanese dance. Through movement practice, demonstration, observation, and discussion, students will explore differences in energy, gesture, musicality, character, and regional aesthetics. Classes are practice-centered and designed for students with or without prior dance experience. Students will learn movement sequences, explore character and expression, and consider the role of dance within social, ceremonial, and performance contexts. The semester will culminate in the World Dance Concert, where the beginning class will present a class dance. |
