This course may be repeated for credit. |
This advanced-level class draws on multiple approaches to dance technique and the moving body. Some of these include modern dance techniques, contemporary/release techniques, contact and other improvisational forms, as well as somatic practices. Modern III focuses on the exploration of complex dance movement sequences, cultivating a specific and personal engagement with movement material, along with heightened attention to the subtleties of phrasing, initiation, and musicality. The course's primary aim is each individual's continued development as a strong, well-rounded, creative, and thoughtful dancer. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Placement on this technical level requires recommendation of dance technique teacher the previous semester or evaluation during first class. Performance is not one of the essential capabilities. However, performance in the arts is neither treated as rote repetition, nor as the objective accomplishment of task. Performance combines first, the variable art of interpretation and second, the creative ability to actualize that interpretation in movement. Performance therefore intersects, but is not appropriately encompassed by the categories of "interpretation" or "designing, creating, realizing." Undergraduates may take this course up to two times for a letter grade and up to four times for credit towards graduation.
The regular instructor teaches Mondays and Wednesdays, while Friday's class will be taught by two different professional visiting artists. |
