A theoretical and practical course in teaching movement to children and adults, this course will center on dance education as a site for social relevance, justice, and action. Utilizing readings, discussion, writing, practice, and reflection, students will investigate theories of education, politics of body, and various methods for teaching through dance and movement. While prior dance training is not required, students should simultaneously register for a movement class. Students with an interest in dance, arts, education, or an interest in creative and bodily engagement in learning will find this course directly applicable. |

Examinations and Assignments: Work will include readings, written assignments, notebooks, and discussion: Observation and evaluation of differing methodical and stylistic approaches in other dance classes; weekly assignments in class preparation and active teaching of movement and music for dance. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Concurrent enrollment in Dance Teaching Practicum, DANC447 (.5 credit) should be taken concurrently with this course.
Students enrolling for DANC341/DANC447 must have at least one afternoon block (two-hour block between 3-6 p.m.) on M, T, W, or Th available for practicum work. Exceptions to these time blocks can only be made on an individual basis by contacting the instructor, Katja Kolcio (kkolcio@wesleyan.edu).
Students interested in this course will be required to meet once as a group shorty after registering in the Spring to determine practicum placements |
