| Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Updated July 5, 2020: This intermediate-level course is intended for students who have had some previous training in West African dance. In this course students will learn more complex and physically challenging dances drawn from several cultures in Ghana. In addition, students will be presented with a rich pallet of general West African movement vocabulary and will continue to engage in the discussion of the cultural context in which the dances occur, through reading, writing, video, and lecture. West African dance under normal circumstances is a communal event that celebrates human connectivity and community building with the dancers and drummers interacting closely with each in the same space. In the fall semester this essential element of West African dance is not possible because of the need to practice safe social distancing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This course is a Hybrid In-Person course with most classes held in-person and some sessions held online until Thanksgiving and fully online after Thanksgiving. The course cannot accept any students who would not be able to participate in the in-person sessions. By enrolling in the course, you pledge to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing (6 feet apart) for the entire duration of each class session. You also acknowledge that the instructor has the right to ask you to leave the class should you fail/choose to not observe these safe practice protocols at any time. Finally, you acknowledge that observing these safe practice protocols does not immune you from contracting COVID-19 and have thought hard about your decision to enroll in the course at this time when the world is still battling the pandemic and will not hold the instructor or Wesleyan university liable for contracting the virus. |
