This course considers theories and methods of dance scholarship and takes a comparative approach to dance as research, research as choreography. This is a research methods course in which we will consider ways that knowledge is constructed and legitimated, focusing on the role of physical/somatic engagement, creativity, and performance in research. Problems and issues central to research pertaining representation, authority, validity, rigor, reliability, and ethics will be addressed in the context of dance studies and critical qualitative research studies. A final research project will be required. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: The Perspectives in Dance as Culture: Dance as Research/Research as Choreography is designed for students who have had some previous experience with research methods (in any discipline) and have a basic grasp of doing scholarly research. The POI process is intended ensure that you are prepared for the work and the level of critical engagement. You will be expected to have a research project, or topic, or issue that you have already given some thought to. This course will explore and critically examine various methods of doing your research, and the various politics that surround those methods (validity, ethics, representation, authority, generalizability, justifiability...). Students will engage in a semester-long research project of their choosing. NO prior experience in dance, performance studies, or anthropology required.
