Certificates: Applied Data Science, The Study of Education |
Course Cluster: Data Analysis Minor, Education Studies Minor |
This course is an introduction to quantitative techniques widely used by economists. Topics include various methods of applied statistics that facilitate the understanding of economic literature and the pursuit of empirical research: elements of probability, correlation, multiple regression, and hypothesis testing. The weekly lab sections are required; labs explore issues relating to the nature and sources of economics data and introduce appropriate statistical computing tools. This class will meet three times each week: twice with an economics professor, and once with a Quantitative Analysis Center (QAC) instructor. |

Examinations and Assignments: Weekly problem sets, three exams, a research paper. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Following a learning by doing approach, the course's lab sessions introduce students to statistical computing. Through a series of hands-on exercises, we learn to work with a variety of data formats and use the programming capabilities of our statistical analysis software (e.g. Stata) to effectively manage and analyze our data.
Completion of Math 118 or Math 122 required, or placement by the Math Department into a 200 level math course. Pre-req overrides will be approved by the Professor teaching Section 01 of ECON 300. |
