Crosslisting:
AMST 124 |
Certificates: Environmental Studies |
The new discipline of ecocriticism affirms the inescapable thereness of the natural world while exploring the way we use our imaginations to understand it. We begin this course by applying ecocritical insights to paintings, and we end by examining environmental Web sites. In between we read poets, nature writers, scientists, novelists, and activists, seeking to understand the natural world as an inspiration and a responsibility and to balance the demands of activism with the joys of aesthetic appreciation. Attention will be paid to critical writing, and there is a chance for some creative writing as well. |
Essential Capabilities:
Comments on weekly short responses will stress clarity, organization, and effectiveness. Longer essays will focus on developing an argument.
