King Lear and The Tempest: The Worlds of Tragedy and Romance
ENGL 117
Fall 2005
Section: 01

Himself a great playwright, Bernard Shaw once claimed that "It is impossible for the mind of man to conceive a greater tragedy than KING LEAR." Shakespeare's final play, THE TEMPEST, is equally celebrated as a Romance which presents a different but complementary way of imagining the world. This course will consist of a close study of these two masterpieces--supplemented by other plays, films, poems, and essays--created in response to Shakespeare's texts.
