Writing Creative Nonfiction

Practice in writing literary and journalistic nonfiction--for example a profile, narrative, review, commentary, travel essay, family sketch, or personal essay. Students are also welcome to try science writing, arts or music reviewing, and other specialized writing designed to engage general readers. Readings include work by Joan Didion, Annie Dillard, William Finnegan, George Orwell, Brian Doyle, Andre Aciman, and many others. |

Examinations and Assignments:
Weekly writing assignments in the first part of the course, followed by revision exercises and a longer project. You may shape the assignments to suit your interests. |

It is highly recommended that students be enrolled in only one Creative Writing course in a semester. If you are admitted to more than one Creative Writing course, we request you choose one and let the instructors know during Adjustment Period. Please be serious about your choice for the consideration of instructors and other students. Contributes to the fulfillment of ENGL major requirements: CW requirement, CW path course (but not 300-level course or upper-level workshop), elective. For the Writing Certificate, this course may be counted either as a craft course or as an elective. It also fulfills the Certificate's workshop requirement. |
