Students in this course are invited to write nonfiction narratives, profiles, memoir, family sketches, reviews, commentary, travel pieces, or other forms of literary nonfiction, shaping the assignments to suit their own interests. The readings serve as models for these exercises, suggesting a range of designs and tones. |

Readings include selections from BEST AMERICAN ESSAYS, BEST AMERICAN TRAVEL WRITING, and BEST AMERICAN SCIENCE WRITING and pieces by such writers as Annie Dillard, George Orwell, Joan Didion, Philip Gourevitch, William Finnegan, Michael Ondaatje, Anne Fadiman, Adrienne LeBlanc, Chang-rae Lee, Pico Iyer, and W.G. Sebald.

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: The course meets twice a week. One meeting is devoted to discussion of the readings and to questions of form and style. In the second meeting, students work in small groups and edit work-in-progress. |
