Certificates: Writing |
Practice in writing several forms of literary and journalistic nonfiction--a profile, narrative, review, commentary, travel essay, family sketch, or personal essay, for example. Students are also welcome to try science writing, arts or music reviewing, and other somewhat specialized writing designed to engage general readers. |

A variety of short and long-form nonfiction, including recent collections of Best American Essays, Best American Travel Writing, Best Food Writing, and Best American Science Writing. A wide range of essays, usually including pieces by Junichiro Tanizaki, George Orwell, Adam Gopnik, Michael Kimmelman, Joan Didion, Annie Dillard, Virginia Woolf, Sara Suleri, James Baldwin, Oliver Sacks, Luc Sante, Brian Doyle, Dubravka Ugresic, Charles Bowden, Gayle Pemberton, Chang-rae Lee, John McPhee, Jamaica Kincaid, and Cheryl Strayed. Books by Philip Gourevitch, William Finnegan, Mark Doty, Anne Fadiman, Linh Dinh, Andre Aciman, and Daniyal Mueenuddin.

Examinations and Assignments: Weekly writing assignments in the first part of the course, followed by revision exercises and a longer project. You may shape the assignments to suit your interests. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: The course counts toward the Theory & Literary Forms and Creative Writing concentrations in the English major.
For the Writing Certificate, this course may be counted either as a craft course or as an elective. It also fulfills the Certificate's workshop requirement. |
