Crosslisting:
MDST 207 |
Course Cluster: Christianity Studies |
This course will concentrate on Chaucer¿s best known works, THE CANTERBURY TALES. We will situate these texts within the vibrant social, cultural, political, and religious context of late fourteenth-century England. Special attention will be paid to the tensions between the various elements represented in the pilgrims¿ tales and their interactions with one another. In addition, the class will also examine the Canterbury Tales as an anthology of medieval literary genres, such as romances and saint¿s lives. We will read this text in the original Middle English and therefore will carefully work our way through the tales; by the end of the course, you will be able to read Chaucer¿s Middle English with fluency. |
