This course is an intensive study of selected works by two of the greatest figures in modern drama, whose careers remarkably parallel and intersect with each other. Shaw wrote the first book on Ibsen in English, and the two together were pathbreakers in transforming 19C theatrical entertainment into 20C dramatic literature. |

Ibsen: BRAND, PEER GYNT, A DOLL HOUSE, GHOSTS, THE WILD DUCK, HEDDA GABLER and others. Shaw: ARMS AND THE MAN, MAJOR BARBARA, PYGMALION, HEARTBREAK HOUSE, SAINT JOAN, selected Prefaces, and THE QUINTESSENCE OF IBSENISM.

Examinations and Assignments: Three papers -- one on Ibsen, one on Shaw, one on both. About 20 pages of writing. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Strict attendance policy. This course fulfills the English department's research option requirement for senior thesis writers. |
