This second-semester elementary French course is designed for students who have taken FREN101 or one to two years of French in high school. The main goal of this course is to enable students to achieve intermediate communicative proficiency in French by developing their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students will thus increase their vocabulary, learn more advanced grammatical structures, and gain further cultural insights into the French-speaking world. In class students will participate in activities that promote communication and cultural competence through vocabulary and grammar exercises, games, skits, conversation, authentic readings, and the use of various audio-visual materials. Classes are conducted in French. |

Students are required to attend a one-hour T.A. session each week. This course is intended for students who have completed FREN101 or have placed into FREN102 through the placement test. Students who have not done so should consult with the professor before pre-registering. Students who are not admitted to the course through pre-registration are strongly encouraged to submit an enrollment request and attend the first class. STUDENTS WHO HAVE TAKEN OR ARE TAKING FREN101 SHOULD BE AWARE THAT THEY ARE NOT GUARANTEED A PLACE IN FREN102. FREN101 & FREN102 are ampersand (&) courses. This means that students will receive credit for FREN101 only if they successfully complete FREN102 or a higher level course. Students who take FREN102 without having taken FREN101 will receive credit for only FREN102. CONDITIONS FOR CR/U STUDENT OPTION The Department of Romance Languages & Literatures normally does not recognize CR/U except for COL students. The reason is that learning effectively in another language calls for regular completion of multiple activities over the course of the term, including faithful attendance and informed participation. In our experience students have counted on grades to determine where to focus their efforts. |
