Practice in Speaking and Writing German
GRST 214
Spring 2010
| Section:
01
|
Certificates: International Relations |
This course is designed to build and strengthen skills in oral and written German. It functions as a "bridge" between the basic language series (GRST 101/102/211) and the more advanced literature/culture courses. This course extends the focus on language and culture through reading, interpreting, and discussing longer German texts (including poems and short stories) begun in GRST 211. Moreover, students will research various aspects of the history and culture of Germany and gain practice writing about and presenting the results of their research. Grammar instruction and review as well as vocabulary building are integral parts of this course, since mastery of the structures of German will facilitate your ability to express more complex ideas. We will supplement the textbook with additional readings, music, and films. Class meetings will be conducted in German. |
Essential Capabilities:
Speaking, Writing Speaking: Intensive practice in speaking German to articulate and defend ideas & interpretations.

Examinations and Assignments: Oral proficiency and progress will be determined by active participation in the classroom that will include informal and directed conversation, group work, grammar review, and vocabulary exercises. There will be two short oral presentations, one of which will be part of the final.
Written proficiency will be determined from written homework, including grammar and vocabulary exercises and the creative writing of short texts. There will be three major compositions (about 500 words each) but no quizzes. A first version of each essay will be returned to you with my suggestions for corrections and improvements; the mandatory revised version will be graded.
The final exam will consist of a 1,000-1,200 word (double-spaced) printed composition written at home and a 10-minute PowerPoint oral presentation. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Regular attendance and participation in class, as well as attendance at German films and events sponsored by the German Studies Department or the German Haus is expected. |
