German Culture Today

Readings, class discussion, and written work will be based on current and recent events and developments in Germany. Topics will include the new Europe and the world, Germany as a multicultural society, German pop culture, contemporary culture. The course will provide extensive practice in speaking and writing, using structured conversation, debates, analysis of different types of texts--journalistic, rhetorical, poetic, visual, scholarly, etc.--and writing assignments in different genres.

Essential Capabilities: Intercultural Literacy, Writing
Writing: Students will practice different levels of diction and master the vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate to a variety of subject matters. They will improve their ability to write correctly and effectively in German.

Intercultural Literacy: Students will gain insight into the political, social, and cultural life of a country whose contributions and political role make it a leader in the world.
