This course is an investigation of the artistically ground-breaking silent and sound films of the Weimar era. Particular attention will be paid to the works of Fritz Lang, G.W. Pabst, and Murnau, directors whose vision still fascinates us today. The course will include readings in film theory and criticism (Kracauer, Benjamin, Arnheim, Brecht) and in the literature and cultural history of the period.
