Course Cluster and Certificates: Caribbean Studies Minor |
Students will learn about the politics and governments of the countries that comprise the American continents and the Caribbean. The content predominantly focuses on the Spanish & Portuguese-speaking countries in Mexico, Central & South America, as well as in the Caribbean. Students also will learn about the relationships between or among Latin American countries and also between Latin America and the United States.
By the end of the semester, students will be able to discuss the region's political history, including periods of authoritarian rule, revolution and democratization. Students will be familiar with social movements and civic engagement in the region. Additionally, students will evaluate the causes and consequences of Latin American countries' institutional design, and the challenges and successes of economic and political development, such as crime, corruption, environmental protection and wealth redistribution. |
