Medieval Europe

HIST 201
Fall 2015 not offered
Crosslisting: MDST 204
Course Cluster: Christianity Studies

This introductory lecture course is a history of European politics, culture, and institutions from the end of the Roman Imperial era through 1520. Within a chronological framework we shall focus on the creation of kingdoms and government; the growth and crises of papal-dominated Christianity--its crusades and its philosophy--the rise and role of the knight, lady, and aristocratic culture; masculinity and gender relations; the crises of the later Middle Ages, including the Black Death, heresy, mysticism, and war. These all contributed to the beginnings of the Renaissance and the Reformation, events that ended the medieval period. We shall also at least glance at the borderlands of Europe, the edges of Islamic and Orthodox worlds.

The course will also provide students with basic introductory exposure to the ideas and methods of the digital humanities through course illustrations and discussions. This will probably include exercises in visualizing the past, exposure to Geographic Information Systems analysis, text-mining, and network analysis.
