This introductory course surveys the history of Europe from approximately 1500 to 1800, paying special attention to intellectual, religious, and political developments during this timeframe. Topics will include the Protestant and Catholic reformations; the French wars of religion; the scientific revolution; the Enlightenment; and the French Revolution, among others. As with any survey, depth will often be sacrificed for breadth; but we will counteract this necessary feature by considering key and carefully selected texts in greater detail. |

No late papers will be accepted. Pre-registered students must attend the first class, or they will be dropped from the class list.
This class fulfills the requirement for the European concentration in the History Major; it also counts toward the pre-industrial course requirement and towards the History and Religion concentration. |
