This course surveys the history, culture, and religion of the contemporary Middle East. Emphasis is on the historical roots of current problems. These include the Arab-Israeli conflict, Westernization versus Islam, U.S. involvement in the region, the Sunni-Shia divide within Islam. Finally, the course will address the causes of the Arab Spring and discuss possible outcomes of the ongoing turmoil that reform movements unleashed. |
