This seminar offers students the opportunity to explore in-depth the many problems associated with Stalin and his era, among them, Stalin's methods as a political actor, the connections of Stalinism and Leninism, Stalinism in the context of the dictatorships of the 1920s to 1940s, Stalin's role in formulating and implementing collectivization and the Great Terror, Stalin and Soviet culture, Stalin's foreign policy and its impact on world Communism, Stalin as wartime leader, Stalin's psychology, and the long-term impact of his rule. |
Essential Capabilities:
Speaking, Writing Students will develop skills writing short analytical essays on selected topics for discussion in the seminar. In addition, they will learn how to develop a longer writing project based upon in-depth research, to refine their work after producing a draft of their research project, and to present the final product in finished scholarly form.
All students will be expected to present the ideas in their short essays and serve as discussants of others' presentations. Toward the end of the semester they will give substantial talks on their research topics to the seminar and also critique the talks and projects of the other members of the seminar.

Major Readings:
Robert Service, STALIN, a Biography There will be additional readings: on Stalin's struggle with the opposition; the Five Year Plans; Collectivization, Hitler and Stalin, World War Two, the Cold War, the Gulag, the question of Stalin's paranoia; the nationalities policy; and a variety of other topics.

Examinations and Assignments: The assignments include: short essays for discussion; a brief research proposal; a modified and refined research proposal; a draft of the research project; an oral report on the research; and the finished research paper. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Faithful attendance at seminar sessions and participation in the discussions. |
