This course is designed to introduce history majors to a range of problems, debates, and critical practices in the discipline of history. Part I will explore varieties of evidence and problems of interpretation; Part II will provide a close examination of a historical problem using primary sources; and Part III will consider methods of and models in the construction of historical explanation. |
Essential Capabilities:
Information Literacy, Writing Students will be able to rework some of their writing assignments, which will develop in stages to culminate in a final project. Students will also be exposed to electronic research resources.

The readings for this course will include a broad range of critical essays and selected primary source documents.

Examinations and Assignments: Students will be required to write several short essays on the weekly readings, a short interpretive essay based on primary sources, and a final research design project that will help them develop skills for doing historical research. Students are expected to participate fully in class discussions. |
