This course is the second half of a two-semester intermediate sequence and a gateway to more advanced courses. Students acquire more complex language structures and refine those they already know. Authentic artifacts such as literary excerpts, films, newspaper articles and short stories constitute the starting points (spunti) of this course. Each spunto helps the student develop an understanding of the history, society and culture of contemporary Italy, offers opportunities to explore similarities and differences between the student's native culture and Italian culture and society, and provides varied activities for the improvement of linguistic competence. By the end of the intermediate sequence, students can expect to express themselves articulately and feel comfortable in an Italian setting, both linguistically and culturally. Class is conducted entirely in Italian. |

Intercultural Literacy, Speaking This course offers students a variety of opportunities to develop their ability to speak and understand Italian, while exploring similarities and differences between their native culture and the Italian world.

Examinations and Assignments: Bi-weekly exams; weekly written and oral assignments; weekly reading, grammar and audio activities in grammar manual and course pack; final project. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Only placement test scores from the current semester are acceptable. Students who place into ITAL 112 by exam may request a prerequisite override from the language coordinator. Students who place into ITAL 112 at the beginning of the academic year are strongly encouraged to enroll in ITAL 111 in the Fall semester. The class meets MWF with instructor and once with course assistant (either Tue. or Thur.) for drill and conversation (esercitazione). Days and times for CA sessions will be announced first week of class. If the student is unable to attend the esercitazione, s/he will be unable to enroll in the course. |
